Your Android phone has been sending location data to Google without your permission

Your Android phone has been sending location data to Google without your permission

This is intrusive!
Did you know? Your Android device has been sending your location to Google even without you granting permission.

Tech companies like Facebook, Google, and other software seeking GPS permission often seek our location for proper rendering of their services to us. By default, we decide whether or not should our location be shared with these online platforms, even with the tech-giant Google. Sometimes we agree on this base on the terms of service of a company like Google. Currently, with Android and Google, it's as if we are no right to dictate if our location data should be shared.

An investigation by Quartz has made us know that our Android devices do not really need our permission before it sends our location to Google. This is security issue we are dealing with.

According to the investigation by Quartz, it was revealed that devices like Smartphones and Tablets running on the Android Operating System forcefully impose location tracking on the user whether or not the location services were enabled. Even when there was no SIM card on the phone, no app was installed, yet the Android device could still track user’s location, as long as the smartphone was connected to the internet. This is achieved by transmitting the address of close cellphone towers back to Google’s system that's used for messages and push notifications.

But there's a section of the Google's terms of service, which is a bit confusing, it reads:

“When you use Google services, we may collect and process information about your actual location. We use various technologies to determine location, including IP address, GPS, and other sensors that may, for example, provide Google with information on nearby devices, Wi-Fi access points and cell towers.”

This process could be safe, the data transferred to Google is encrypted. It could also be a threat to user's privacy if, for example, the user's device has been compromised by a third party containing malicious contents like spyware or other hacking means which could potentially receive these data.
This is really not a good thing because it seems like Google is betraying the public’s trust.
According to Gizmodo, they contacted Google regards these reports and a spokesperson told them;

“To ensure messages and notifications are received quickly, modern Android phones use a network sync system that requires the use of Mobile Country Codes (MCC) and Mobile Network Codes (MNC). In January of this year, we began looking into using Cell ID codes as an additional signal to further improve the speed and performance of message delivery. However, we never incorporated Cell ID into our network sync system, so that data was immediately discarded, and we updated it to no longer request Cell ID. MCC and MNC provide necessary network information for message and notification delivery and are distinctly separate from Location Services, which provide a device’s location to apps.”

According to a claim from Google, the feature never got to be implemented, and the team have all concluded to discard it completely.
However, according to Gizmodo, a Google spokesperson responded to us that by the end of November, Android devices will stop the habit of sending cellular tower location data to Google.

Conclusion
We all know Google is trying its best to make out reliable security and favourable services to everyone who uses any of its products and services, and this is achieved by collecting our data in exchange. But all I'm saying is, whatever Google is trying to implement on us, we should be aware of it and also have the decision to either opt in or out.

Android Oreo 8.1 developer preview is now available

Android Oreo 8.1 developer preview is now available

Is Android Oreo getting an update so soon?
Not so long the Android 8.0 Oreo was released on the Android platform, and so soon we're expecting an update to the Oreo operating system.

Introducing the Android version 8.1 Oreo OS. Google has recently released its developer review. for now, only Android Beta Program users can test it. Meanwhile, the 8.1 Oreo is expected to roll out in December.

The Android version 8.1 Oreo is very easy to install, though Google has made some slight changes making it different from the way we install previous versions of Android Operating Systems.
On the Android website, Google has made its Developer Preview OTA downloads page to redirect to the normal factory image page not making users to access the OTA download links.

With this change Google has made, flashing of OTAs may not be the only method of installing the Android Oreo v8.1 instead, you can choose to download and flash the full factory image if you happen to have an unlocked bootloader, or you can simply register for the Android Beta Program while you wait to get a notification about the over-the-air (OTA) update, though it won't take long to be released.

Note that the developer preview is only compatible with the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, and Pixel C.

If you don't have any of these smartphones just like me, let's have our hands crossed while we wait for the OTA updates to be unleashed, then we shall enjoy same benefits like others. Meanwhile, if I should come across the benefits of this Android 8.1 Oreo and have confirmed them to be genuine, I won't hesitate to share them with you on this blog.

That should be all for now, I'm still finding more resourceful info from reliable sources. Thanks a lot for visiting Oshetech, please do come back.

Whatsapp just rolled in live location sharing feature to its app. Read how it works

Whatsapp just rolled in live location sharing feature to its app. Read how it works

A few weeks ago, the news was online that whatsapp was planning to introduce live sharing feature to its platform. And now, the feature was just recently activated which I think will start rolling out to users when they update their whatsapp to the latest version. However, in this post is everything you need to know about the new live location sharing feature.

Live location sharing is the new useful tool that has been introduced to whatsapp which lets users share their exact location in real-time with friends and family, or even to groups they belong to. This is the advanced method of sharing your location compared to the previous location sharing tool.

How does it work?
The live location sharing feature is end-to-end encrypted when shared among friends and family members. The duration for this is limited, you can choose to share your real-time location with your friends within a given time, you will have options like 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour or even something else.
Once the stipulated time is reached, your friend or members of your group chat will stop seeing your real-time location. Even before the time is reached, you can choose to terminate the sharing task.

In a group chat, multiple members can share their real-time locations almost at the same time, and you will still be able to view all their locations right in a single map

How to share live location in a chat
It's pretty simple…
• Open a chat with your friend or a group you belong to which you want them to know your real-time location.
• Just below your screen is the usual attach icon, click it and select Location, now here's the new feature option “share live location”. Select the option and choose the duration you want and tap send. It's done.

Final words
This is best for meeting up with new friends, and keeping loved ones so close while you know where they are at a particular point in time.
The feature will be available to users of both Android and iOS devices. We should be expecting new update notification of whatsapp because I'm sure the feature will roll out to a new version of whatsapp. Follow me on Facebook to keep informed of what's going on in the world of tech.

Microsoft Edge Browser Now Available On Android And iOS

Microsoft Edge Browser Now Available On Android And iOS

A few days back, news leaked out online that Microsoft is planning to make Microsoft Edge browser available to Android and iOS devices.

If you're not too familiar with the Microsoft Edge browser, it is the successor to Internet Explorer browser and it's included in the windows 10 set as its default browser.

The mobile version of the Microsoft Edge is currently available for those having the new Windows 10 Insider Preview build. Having the Edge web browser on mobile devices running on iOS and Android will build better approach and more user-friendly with the windows 10.

Having the newly designed mobile version of Edge web browser on your Android/iOS devices lets you enrol the continue on PC feature, which means you can resume your activity on your phone from where you left it on your computer as it allows for synchronization between your computer and the smartphone.

Apart from your search habit, your bookmarks, passwords, history, and other fill in details will also get synchronized so you can access them easily especially when they're needed.

What's new on Edge mobile web browser???
The search engine: As usual the default search engine dedicated to the Edge browser is the Bing search engine. Now on the mobile version, is not only limited to Bing, also to Google’s search engine and Yahoo search engine, you can make your choice of which search engine is desired to be your default type.
Too bad the Edge mobile web browser does not support ad blocking. Perhaps it should in its next version.

The design: Microsoft Edge mobile browser has pretty much the same design as the Chrome and Safari browsers. These browsers are familiar in surfaces and having features like QR-code reader, Reading View, voice search, Hub View and more.

For now, Microsoft is only aiming at smartphones running on Android and iOS platforms, tablets are yet to gain support but I'm certain that as time goes by, tablets users will benefit too.

For Windows Insider users, all you have to do is visit this page and confirm it is an insider, which will prompt Microsoft to send you a message containing the instructions to install its first Edge Beta for your smartphone running on Android or iOS platform.

Currently, the official app has not yet been introduced, we should be expecting it before the year-end. Though the preview app was recently introduced to Google Play Store for Android users.
Click here to download the preview app for the meantime.

So that should be all, for now, regards Microsoft Edge mobile browsers. We'll keep you updated as soon as something comes up. Thanks for visiting Oshetech, please do come back for more tech info.

Android 8.0 Oreo Released, Its 10 New Features Will Get You Excited

Android 8.0 Oreo Released, Its 10 New Features Will Get You Excited

Finally! The tech-giant Google has officially announced the latest Android O. The Operating System has been confirmed by Google to be known as Android 8.0 Oreo, now we know what the “O” simply stands for.

Yes, everyone had been thinking of what name could be given to Android O, and after several suggestions have been made, Google has taken its final decision by confirming the Android O to be Android Oreo.
The launching of Android 8.0 Oreo kicked off on Monday being August 21st, in New York, during the Solar eclipse event, it was indeed a special day.

But what could be so special about Android Oreo?
I can say that Android 8.0 Oreo was built in the sense of advancement in technology. I remember when Android 4.2.2 through 4.4 Jelly Bean used to be the talk of the world, and today it's no more considerable, Hahaha… without wasting much of your time, let's get to know the goodies of Android Oreo.

A few days ago, I made a post on this blog about Android 8.0 OTA updates.
This is one thing I love about the latest Android Oreo Operating System, its OTA updates work irrespective of storage space. Yes, I am not mistaking, Android 8.0 OTA updates will still work even when your device has storage space as little as 100KB or even 1KB. You know storage space used to be a challenge when downloading OTA updates of any OS as most times it usually requires about 1GB of free space or even more than that. I would have love to explain how the OTA updates work without consuming heavy storage space, but I've discussed it before. If you want to know how it works, then scroll up to where I mentioned “ its OTA updates works irrespective of storage space” and click on the link you see. That's aside

There are reasons you should be more excited as you are, those reasons are the wow features of Android 8.0 Oreo which will be reading soon.

Features Of  Android 8.0 Oreo
Android Oreo is packed with so many features which are discussed below.

#1. Picture-in-Picture
Google has made activities being done with smartphones easier by introducing picture-in-picture functionality into Android Oreo.
This feature would allow users perform multi tasks simultaneously which is similar to the Nougat feature, though, it is more advanced than that because, with Android Oreo, users would be able to continue watching videos on a small-sized simulated/virtual screen while operating on other apps. For example, a user could be watching a video on YouTube while making use of Google+ app.

#2. Background Limits
In Android smartphones, there have been improvements at liming the background activity of apps when you think there is a need for saving battery life, and with the invention of Android Oreo, it has gained more improvement.

#3. Manage Notification Priorities
With Android Oreo, users can influence their apps notification categories using “notification channel”. Users can categorize which notifications to receive and not to be received.

In addition, Google has also made it possible that users can be able to snooze individual notifications for some time like an hour, 30 minutes, 15 minutes and so on.

#4 Notification dots
This feature is quite similar to #3 feature.
Notification dots are visual indicators displayed on apps icon indicating that you have a waiting message/notification. Of course, iPhone users should be familiar with this feature.

#5. Adaptive icons
This is another amazing feature brought to you by Android 8.0 Oreo. With this feature, developers can be able to make use of various shapes of app icons, though this depends on the manufacturer’s choice. These different shaped app icons will also support the notification dots feature mentioned on #4

#6. Improved Camera App
Having Android 8.0 Oreo on your Android device will improve your camera quality. One of its improvement is the double-tap feature that lets you double-tap on the screen to zoom objects up to 50% in the camera app.
Some shortcut buttons will also be added to the camera app. These buttons will let you switch between photo and video rather than the usual swiping which users might have found uninteresting.

#7. Google Play Protect
This is all about making your Android device more secured.
Android Oreo will be receiving this feature to keep your device from corrupt programs, though the feature is also rolling out via Google Play Services to other devices with older OS like the Nougat and probably Marshmallow.
The duty of this feature is to automatically scan incoming and already- installed apps for malware and then sending you notifications if it happened to spot any suspicious content and prompt you to take action.

#8. New Emojis
This is a very usual feature being updated each time new versions of Android are set out. Google did not just only introduced new Emojis to Android Oreo but did update existing ones giving them new designs

#9. Data Sync across all your mobile devices
Of course, this has been existing in Google Chrome browser as one of its features.
It's a good thing that Google is extending this feature to Android 8.0 Oreo OS.
This Autofill feature, when given permission to function, syncs app logins (password, username, phone number and other login information), addresses, Credit card details, and other information.

The reason for this feature according to Google is because “ Android users already rely on a massive count of password managers to auto-fill repetitive information.

I know you must be exhausted reading this article,  so sorry about that. Let me round it up with the 10th feature

#10. Octopus Easter Egg
There is no way an Android version would be discussed without adding its Easter egg.
Android 8.0 Oreo’s Easter egg is an octopus.
To play with Octopus on Android Oreo devices, go to settings»» About phone, then tap Android version until Android O appears. Continue tapping the O for several times and then long-press it to pop up the Octopus.

Finally!!!  I drop my pen… Haven read this article, do not fail to drink a cup of coffee because you must be very tired by now.
